Bob was our cat. That’s him in the picture. I like this song. A 3/4 rhythm which confuses some people, especially in the acoustic version, until the drums come in fully. I remember writing this a long time ago; maybe 1991 or so(?). I have never managed to get the arrangement that I want, and, as a consequence, a recording I’m really happy with.
This version has too many effects on it and it loses all clarity, in my view. I am happy in general with it; it has the right feel to it and I like some of the guitar sounds. One of my daughters was very surprised by it. She kept, positively, comparing it with the Libertines (her favourite band of the moment. She just made a pilgrimage to Reading Festival to see them, and then I took her and her sisters to Camden where she met and spoke to John the bass player – a very happy day for her). She thought that I must have copied them, until she realised how old the song is. She then struggled with the fact that her dad might have a bit of cool in him somewhere… sorry Bee!).
Anyhoo …. I like the rhythms. I like the melodies. I like the vocal lines and figures in the synths. One day I would like to find the time to do another recording of the song. I’d like to take my time and ensure I got the right sounds. They exist… but only so far in my head.
Here are the lyrics:
Bob’ Garden
Looking up at her ‘til she looks away
And then there’s seeing her in town on a winter’s day
Touch of the hand, baby, temperatures higher
I need to know, baby, what you desire!
And then there’s fire
And then there’s fire
Oh, dance with me. Oh!
What it’s like to be away from you
(I’ll take you to a place where you wanna be)
Can you bear to be away from me?
(In Bob’s Garden by the sea)
Memories of times that seem long ago
And then there’s thinking of the places that we’d like to go
All of the time, baby, I have is yours
But it’s in through the windows and straight out the doors
And then there’s fire
And then there’s fire
Oh, dance with me. Oh!
What it’s like to be away from you
(I’ll take you to a place where you wanna be)
Can you bear to be away from me?
(In Bob’s Garden by the sea)
What it’s like to be away from you
(I’ll take you to a place where you wanna be)
Can you bear to be away from me?
(In Bob’s Garden by the sea)
