Your Eyes

A simple love song. I wrote this song maybe four years ago. This was the first demo recording I did of it. I have done a couple of recordings of it since, but none have really captured the song as it was in my head.  It’s just voice and guitar, and the tempo isn’t as consistent as it ought to be, but I think this articulates the feel I was looking for.

After recording this I altered it so that a couple of the choruses were sung in Spanish, which added something. I think it embarrassed my daughters as every time I played it at one of Gamlingay Records’ acoustic nights they did silly things to put me off!

Harmonically it doesn’t do much. It’s based around I, IV and V chords, though there are actually two others thrown in, II and VI. Not terribly complicated. But then pop songs tend not to be! It was written on the guitar and is played in the key of E major. I like the tune. I quite like my singing. Seems to have an Irish lilt.

The words speak to being far away from the one you love and yet, through the medium of telecommunications, sounding like you are nearby. This was one of the two songs I played in my one and (so far) only US gig… In Boston I asked the hotel consierge where I could find a live music night. He rang his friend who ran one and got me in. He also got me on the bill to play, which I wasn’t expecting, so I got up on stage and asked to borrow a guitar. Eventually someone took pity on me and I played two songs, this being one of them.

One day I’ll make a better recording of this. I thought piano might go well with it and perhaps cello or viola. What do you think?
