So I recently found this. It is the first song I ever wrote, when I was 14. It was one of the first songs we played in my first band “Headache” – and you can see us in all our glory at our first ever gig in North Marston village hall below (that’s me on the bass with the fetching denim waistcoat, with metal studs and patches, as well as the frizzy hair!).
Anyhoo, I came across this and thought “I have never recorded it.” It’s funny how the song has stayed in my head all of these years. The recording went pretty well. After the first version I decided the song needed a bridge, so came up with one. You’ll be able to tell who my favourite band were (and still are!) when you listen to it. In hindsight, it’s interesting that I wrote it in 1981 – the year the band started disbanding, though I have continued to love them with the ‘new’ members.
I hope you enjoy the song. It could really do with a Francis Rossi vocal and guitar solo, as well as some real drums from John Coghlan. I can’t play the drums, so I’m afraid that is programmed (you’ll be able to tell!). I’m pleased with how it came out, and it really does take me back to my early days. I still have that Satellite bass. I seem to remember I paid £55 to a school caretaker for it.
For this recording I used my Marcus Miller 7 jazz bass, my Francis Rossi Fender tele for the solos, my Squire tele (signed by Rick Parfitt!!!) for the rhythm (with an added Strat track for a bit more fullness) and programmed the drums with Cubase Groove Agent. The piano and organ are Steinberg sounds too. My voice sounded way too “nice” on the first take, so I re-did it. It’s still sounds too nice, but that’s me I’m afraid!
Let me know what you think. Lyrics below the pictures.

Please Leave Me
(c) Phil Hunt 1981
Go away, don’t come back, I don’t need you any more
Oh baby, what you’ve done to me, I feel so sure
That you did what you did just to tease me, oh yeah
But now I know your game you know I’ll not come back again.
Chorus
Please leave me! Please leave me!
I don’t want you now, I don’t want you, want you know
You were nice, so very nice, and I really did adore
Those games we used to play, now you’ve gone running out the door
Well don’t come back, now you’ve gone I don’t want you any more
You’ve had your little game so don’t come running through my door
Repeat Chorus
Guitar solo
The last time I saw you I’d never seen you look so fine
You tried to persuade me for all the love in the world
You were mine
Now I was sure that you were true but now I’ve seen right through your plan
I know that what we used to do I’ll never do again
So don’t come back now you’ve gone, don’t you tease me, oh yeah
You’ve had your little game you know I’ll not come back again
Repeat chorus x2
Guitar solos to end
